From Luciens files - File 278459/912 - Contact List - Jarrion Holt
Major smuggler, supplies to most of the minor gun-runners, drug dealers and cold traders in the sector. Supplies to a scintillian gun-runner called Faydra Mord who Lyra is acquainted with. Faydra has spoken of Jarrion as being trustworthy (in as far as he keeps his agreements that is) though he's somewhat of a hedonist. Zee and 'modesty' have apparently dealt with him as well and confirmed the 'hedonist' assessment. Location of his wife and daughter in attached file - 278459/913 and security information on how to access his home estate undetected - 278459/914. Willing to transport 'exotic' items for a sufficient price and doesn't ask any questions at all.

Interlude.
Given their escape vessels lack of Warp cabability, travel to the location that Lyra has specified as a possible base for the smuggler Jarrion Holt has taken several months. During the journey Jerra has treated all the teams wounds and injuries and unlike Lucien actually seems to care about the quality of her work and bothers with the sort of tissue regeneration that he never concerned himself with. Having little else to occupy her time she has fastidiously retreated all their old wounds, broken and reset misaligned bones and generally restored them all to somewhere near your peaks in both health and appearance.Once the basic checks of the ship have been completed the Tech Priest Borgia is similarly overburdened with spare time so has serviced all their weaponry and armour.

Unfortunately the need to ration food supplies has resulted in most of the team being hungry most of the time and some tempers are beginning to fray.

Their pilot 'Zee' calls over the ships vox that they're approaching the specified co-ordinates and that every-one should secure themselves as the ride may get a bit bumpy...Several minutes into the journey the vox activates again "Interrogator Tevet, we could do with some help at the navigation console if any-ones qualified to do so..."

Xanthis volunteers to help out

He notes that though Zee and Modesty are highly skilled pilots, they are reacting to each moment of danger without planning what position that reaction will put them in. By calculating the relative position of each asteroid and it's path he plans a more optimum route that will be more efficient and the ship is successfully navigated to a relatively stable part of the field in which can be seen a serviceable if somewhat ramshackle space station with a cruiser class vessel docked on it.

Several small fighters emerge from the station and head in their ships direction before they're Voxed y the incoming fighters "Identify yourself or be fired upon" After some brief introductions from Lyra they are escorted to a large loading bay where after landing they are greeted by a short, fat, balding gentleman with an escort of 30 or so guards armed with a variety of low penetration weapons of the sort you'd expect to be carried by naval personnel. After further introductions are made Jarrion Holt states that he wants 10,000 Gelt to transport them and their vessel to the Magnolia system, though he will refuel your vessel and stock up your supplies as part of the price. Lyra manages to trade all the agents excess weapons and equipment and that combined with a lot of charm and a few threats manages to reduce the price considerably. Kallos tells her that he'll reimburse her from funds later...probably...

The journey is uneventful and the team all have plenty of opportunities to relax, train and generally try to prepare themselves to discover if the attempt on their lives and the trouble on Magnolia are part of some grand conspiracy or simply an unusual coincidence. Jarrion disembarks the ship from the cruisers loading bay just outside of the systems monitoring stations in order to avoid having to answer any difficult questions from the local authorities.

The onboard vox network activates "Interrogator? we're being hailed by the orbital defense station...they require our identities and wish to know our purpose in the system..."

Interrogator Tevet identifies himself and his team and they are met on the planet by the Governors Liason, Quint Caridon and his apparently useless but attractive assistant Rhia.
They direct the agents to the main Administratum building where the chief Adept Constantine Barbosa apparently compiles every bit of information that it's possible to collate on the planet...perhaps some clue can be found amongst the files he's compiled.....Gmorts Chaoticahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00018939871578423347noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1949391324807976033.post-56459816622153509472012-06-10T22:33:00.001+01:002012-06-10T22:33:31.883+01:00Part 4 - A Victory...Of Sorts...

The Agents decide to use the various access tunnels and shafts that they've been using previously to get around the vessel in order to get to the main bridge. A team consisting of much of Lucien's remaining 'staff' have been sent to the previously discovered gun-cutter to both secure it for study and to potentially use it as an escape vessel should it be possible. Lucien took his remaining 'projects' with him as protection while he attempted to prevent the ship from exploding around them and the acolyte team headed to the bridge in an attempt to re-take the vessel and activate the Murder Servitors that should have been protecting the Corvus.

While almost at the bridge the vox crackles to life. They recognise the voice as the Tech-priest who was sent to the gun-cutter "We've tried to get through to Lucien but he's not answering his Vox...we were ambushed by some of those lizard things you described...they took us completely by surprise, not even that creation of Luciens detected their approach which was a shock...We lost most of the engineers and that thing of the Magos's got torn to pieces almost immediately...If it hadn't been for Bruul we'd have been slaughtered...." There's a brief pause "Anyway were here now and Xanthis was correct, this device is an extremely convoluted gene encoded security device and it's booby trapped. With the right sample we can deactivate it simply but without it we've a very low chance of success" "Luciens last order was to secure the vessel to use as potential escape craft should we be able to disable the security measures, I'm not sure what he'd want us to do now, what are your orders?"

The agents decide to leave the remains of the gun-cutter team where they are and continue to the bridge. After some consultation with Xanthis about the optimum route, Interrogator Kallos and the Death Cultist Varn decided to sneak along several ventilation shafts parallel to the bridges entrance chamber and having made it to a good vantage point undetected Kallos uses his Vox to transmit what he hears to the rest of his team...

The access area to the main bridge is surprisingly empty of enemies, though the ones that Kallos can see are extremely formidable looking and there are several who seem to be obviously in charge of this aspect of the operation. Stationed centrally in the chamber is a large six legged robot some twenty feet tall, both it's arms are giant claws that crackle with dark energies, it's one shoulder mounts a pair of heavy calibre cannons and the other has some sort of large nozzeled weapon (presumably a Flame weapon of some description) but these seem relatively harmless when compared to the gigantic cannon protruding from it's chest. It occasionally pans across the approach to the chamber before turning to a figure in ornately decorated Power Armour at the centre of what you can only presume is an honour guard of some form. They have similar armour to their leader though it's less heavily ornamented. Each is armed and armoured in a way that is far superior to anything you've encountered so far. A mechanical voice, completely void of expression emanates from a grill in what you presume is the gigantic monstrosities head "Your sure their on the way?"

Xanthis identifies this monstrosity as a Chaos Defiler though he notes that one that displays any kind of intelligence should be considered unusual.

The figure in the ornate armour turns to answer "Our informant's information has been faultless up to now...I have no reason to doubt his commitment to our cause at this late juncture...It must look like we are attempting to kill them as well for the ruse to work however which is why our most formidable forces have been allocated where they are"

Several of the Throne Agents begin to have suspicions about the role of Lucien in this attack as he seems suspiciously absent at moments of danger and the amount of circumstantial evidence against him is growing with each encounter...

The armoured figure turns to another individual "Malaki, how are our forces fairing?"

'Malaki' disciple of Magos Vathek

Standing in one corner is a heavily augmented Tech-priest surrounded by Servitors of a number of familiar types ranging from Gun Servitors to types designed for lifting and a few stranger ones of unknown types mixed in. Directly in front of him is the strangest looking servitor of them all. Though having the approximate dimensions of a human it's body is covered in antenna, radar dishes and a variety of vid screens. Cabling leads from it to several similar but smaller versions of itself which seem to have been crafted from the bodies of children which are in turn interfaced with various of the ships systems. The Tech-priest adjust several dials on the aforementioned servitor...

"These acolytes are far more resilient than we expected. Even the specifically selected assassins only managed to terminate the lesser members of Crowes teams though several of them were apparently wounded" There's a brief pause as more controls are manipulated on the strange Servitor "Engineering has apparently been cleared of our forces...but that was to be expected now wasn't it. I told you we'd need something more than cannon fodder and the look-alike of some dead whore to guarantee success...the secondary plan is a far more viable course of action given his loyalties...or lack thereof..."

This particular statement does little to clear Luciens name, unfortunately...

"Though we are nearing full control of the ships systems now that no-ones countering our efforts the damage to the vessel is severe...They'll be on our way here as we predicted and despite their reputation they will fall before Crassus...and your own might of course" he adds somewhat as an afterthought. The Power armoured figure then speaks again "Considerable resources have been allocated to this operation and the consequences to ourselves should we fail...her...don't bear considering..."

Xanthis suddenly screamed in pain as the device he took from the first Tech-Priest they encountered has returned to life, tendrils and spikes slice through his armour and embed themselves into his flesh. Xanthis hurls the device away and attempts to use his Web Pistol to pin it in place but unfortunately it explodes before he can render it safe

Kallos then hears the Tech-priest say "We have company..." and the enemies on the bridge turn towards the sound of the explosion...

Xanthis identifies the iconography on the armour of the Chaos Marines as that of Khorne and given the attitude of Khorne followers to combat and Psykers a plan is agreed upon. It is decided that several of the acolytes (with Atellus, the teams Psyker amongst them) will lure the Khorne worshippers away from the bridge access in order to destroy them by ambush without the support of the Defiler or the Tech-priest and his Servitors. Varn and Atellus stand in the doorway in order to lure the warriors towards them and after a miraculous avoidance of a Battle Cannon shell fired at them Atellus cries of "Hi, I'm a Psyker" have the desired effect...

Atellus seems to have the Emperor watching over him as seven Bolt Pistol shots miss him completely and the eighth hits but does no damage...Then from their various ambush sites the agents manage to defeat their enemies with a combination of precision fire-power, lethal close combat attacks and a bit more luck, though several of them are wounded and three of the Guardsmen are slaughtered. Just as the team is catching their breaths the Defiler enters the corridor...

Varn slides under the Possessed creation slicing through any cables or bits of machinery that look vital while the rest of the team with any kind of suitable weapon attempt to pierce it's armour. A perfectly placed shot from Lyra's Plasma Pistol finishes of the vile Chaos creation and the resulting explosion fortunately fails to kill any of the team that were standing nearby. Having eliminated the bridges most potent defenders the acolytes of Crow then destroyed the Tech-Priest guarding the bridge entrance using a combination of high explosives and overwhelming fire-power.

Once the battle ends Lucien appears with what is increasingly looking like convenient timing. He immediately walks over to the strange looking Servitor and starts to examine it carefully... "I think I can open the bridge using this interface..." The Bridge then opens with a mechanical grinding of gears...Inside the bridge are a selection of bridge crew members that are armed with a variety of las and other low penetration weapons. the most senior looking person seems to recognise you and runs over...

"Thank goodness your here...Is that bastard dead?"

After a brief conversation it's evident that she's not talking about the Chaos Marines, Tech-priests or the Defiler. "Not them...Lucien..." The bridge officer continues "As soon as Crow was out of the way he had all the control protocols for the Murder Servitors channelled through to engineering together with bypasses for all the other systems... Every-time we tried to get a system on-line he just shut it down again. As soon as we saw you we knew he must be dead..."

Lucien then enters the bridge to a somewhat frostier reception than even he's used to.....A debate then ensues during which Lucien points out the inconsistencies with the hypothesis that he is the traitor that unfortunately for him appear to be falling on deaf ears...It looks like a violent confrontation is imminent. When all the attention is on Lucien, the Throne Agents are suddenly ambushed by a selection of Las and Autogun fire to the back...Apparently the bridge crew are not what they appeared to be.....

Unfortunately the aliens have grossly underestimated the level of alertness that becomes innate in a team that has survived the dangers that this group has and the ambush is a failure though for some reason the sight of their transformation causes Mann's nerve to break and he runs from the battle and only returns when the enemies have been defeated. The bridge is a mess, several important consoles have been smashed by weapons fire and there are bits of alien splattered all over the floor and walls...

"So you really thought I had betrayed you all then...?" says Lucien though he doesn't seem as surprised as you might expect. He then walks back outside to the weird looking Servitor and plugs himself back into it...

"This ship isn't going to last much longer without repairs that we have neither the resources, the opportunity nor the time to implement I'm afraid" "We're in a race to repair our ship before they repair theirs and that's a race we're certain to lose..." "and worryingly most of the remaining enemy forces now seem to be heading this way"

The acolytes take a tissue sample from the dead Tech-priest to check if it's the code they need to disable the lock on the gun-cutter and they discover that when combined with a device discovered on the body of the aliens leader it becomes so. The actual bridge crew are found dead in various storage cupboards and rooms adjacent to the deck. Some have been dead for weeks, others just days.

Lucien returns to the bridge with dire news. "I can only think of one viable solution to our problem...I'll move the Corvus closer to the enemy ship, use the teleporter to transport myself and whatever servitors I can get together to the enemy ship and do as much damage as I can while you escape in the gun-cutter..If there was somebody else to do the job I'd get them to do it but unfortunately I'm the only person with enough knowledge of spaceship design to know where to hit to cause the maximum disruption" "As for the gun-cutter It's not really designed for deep space travel but there's a cold trade smuggler who uses a certain asteroid field nearby as a base. He supplies to one of Lyras gun runner friends so she might be able to call in a favour and get transport to Magnolia which is apparently both the source of this operation against us and coincidentaly was where our next mission was to be"

"How do I know?"

"I had heard there's trouble on the planet from some of my contacts there and Inquisitor Meridina was given the job of sorting it out...she was planning on having you all replaced and use this ship as her base of operations to sort out the problem using her own operatives" He then hands Kallos a dataslate. "The mission details are on here"

He also hands a dataslate to Lyra "Here's a list of all my contacts on Magnolia. The ones who will help you if you drop my name are listed as well...I wouldn't tell them what's happened to me though...most of them only do what I ask because they're afraid of what might happen to people they care about should they refuse..." It's obvious that such a list would have considerable value for any-one wishing to involve themselves in Magnolia's underworld.

He throws Xanthis a portable cogitator "Some light reading for the trip...none of the others would understand most of it anyway" Even a brief look at the information on the unit shows a library of lore that probably shouldn't be in one place though it does appear from the file numbering system that several files have been removed.

"Now go on before I change my mind" Lucien turns and starts to interface with one of the bridge consoles "Well...what are you waiting for?"

The rest of the Throne Agents reach what's left of the luxury crew quarters deck to find it in the same state of destruction as they left it and then the vox crackles to life, it's Lucien. "The course is set, and I'm nearly back at the teleporter...give me 15 more minutes and then get the hell out of there..." The team grabs what gear they can before joining the members of Luciens crew that were sent to the gun-cutter. Between Xanthis and Borgia the encryption device is disabled and the cutter is free to go. The last thing detected by the ships scanners as it leaves is a massive explosion that can only have come from an exploding starship power core...
Despite a valiant effort from the agents the masses of enemies begin to overwhelm them...it's only a matter of time before they're deaths become a certainty...until...

There is a familiar voice over the vox "Everybody get down and stay down..."

Over the chaos of battle the surviving team members hear the faint sound of rotary cannons engaging followed by the unmistakable sound of hundreds of solid rounds impacting with flesh, mixed with this drone is the sound of heavier shells impacting with flesh and bone. The sounds of battle around them is replaced with the terrified screams of their enemies and is then filled with torn body parts and a cloud of bloody particles as the hordes of opponents are reduced to a bloody mist...

Four massive Servitors of a similar configuration to the type of 'murder servitor' created by Lucien stand at the opposite end of the corridor from the direction you entered. Though these servitors normally carry their weapons in their hands, this type has had each of their arms replaced with clusters of three assault cannons attached by ammo feeds to massive backpacks of spare bullets, in addition each has some kind of large calibre cannon at the right shoulder. Standing between them is the familiar figure of Lucien Baptiste, at his side is the former assistant of Abraham Sand - Rebekah, surrounding him are four large cyber mastiffs and behind are a group of 30 or so people none of which you recognise. Presumably these are the surviving members of his engineering staff.

Lucien together with his pets and Rebekah strolls over to the figure chained to the central altar and extends four mechadendrites from his back. Each of these mechadendrites appears to have some kind of manipulator on the end in addition to the usual tool attachments. He very carefully removes the chains from the victim and Rebekah scoops her up and throws the potential sacrifice over her shoulder.

"Interesting choice of bait, don't you think?" says Lucien. "The rest of engineering is now secure. They were attempting to prevent me from accessing the main Servitor area and armoury...bastards..." He gestures at the girl slumped over Rebekahs shoulder..."Rebekah...put her in my quarters and secure the room then meet me at the armoury..."

"Lets get some bigger guns..."

Lucien walks back down the main corridor towards the entrance with his entourage in tow. He takes a turning down a narrower side passage towards the Munitorium. Several heavily armoured doors slide aside as Lucien approaches apparently without any action on his part, he then interfaces a mechadendrite with a complicated control panel outside the final door and it slides into the ceiling to reveal a long chamber packed with weaponry.

"Take whatever you need"

While their equipping yourselves, a large figure enters the armoury with a few slightly battered looking Stormtroopers with him. The Ogryn walks over to Lucien "Boss" "I found these guys by one of the side entrances...You know the one with that spiky think with the needles and the blades that sliced up that girl who annoyed because she said she wouldn't..." Lucien interrupts at this point - "Take them to Mann and have them re-equip themselves, we'll need all the help we can get" and then he leaves the armoury for some reason.

Everyone's surprised to notice that the Ogryn appears to be using an Auspex which is presumably how he found the troopers who were about to be dismembered by some random creation of Luciens. It's a bit dented and he's using a stick of some kind to push the buttons as they're too big for his fingers to depress normally but even so it's a definitely unusual as Ogryns are generally regarded to be really stupid.

The very weary looking troopers explain that they were gradually forced back by the overwhelming numbers of intruders and the few survivors got split up during the retreat. They think they're the only survivors but they can't be sure.

Lucien returns from wherever he'd wandered off to.

"Every-one ready?"

The engineering crew has been equipped with a variety of Las and projectile weaponry with the augmented ones taking heavy weaponry in addition, the rest of Lucien's entourage have selected a variety of specialist weaponry including a quantity of explosives and other equipment.

"I need control of the main bridge if were going to reactivate the Murder Servitors, we also need to find out who's countering my attempts to regain control of the vessel...some-one on that bridge is in league with our enemies or at the very least is somehow under their control." "If we can't identify who that is specifically then we'll need to execute them all...just to be sure..."

"I'll send a team to secure the gun-cutter you spoke about and Borgia can confirm for me Xanthis's assessment of the encryption device" "I'll see if I can repair some of the damage that's been done to the ship so it doesn't explode before we can re-take it, Rebekah and the remaining of my 'projects' can come with me. I’ll need the protection while I work." "The Murder Servitors I've managed to activate can stay here to protect engineering and I presume the rest of you will be the team that's going to be assaulting the bridge?"

One of the engineering staff from the team being sent to the gun-cutter asks if Bruul can accompany them...

"Okay then" "Bruul grab some gear"

The Ogryn walks to an alcove and grabs a large piece of chest armour that appears to have been made for him specifically and a combat harness. He grabs a large calibre, drum fed, automatic shotgun from a rack and several large tubular devices that are presumably Ogryn sized Grenades. He also grabs a large rucksack which he fills with ration packs and seemingly as an afterthought he drops a couple more grenades and a spare drum magazine on the top and swings it over his shoulder. He goes to walk away and then turns to look at the armour rack before grabbing a 2nd large backpack which he also fills to the brim with combat rations. "You never know" he grunts before following the rest of the team allocate to the gun-cutter detail.

With everyone armed and armoured the Throne Agents prepare to retake their vessel.
Surviving several assassination attempts by Loxatl merceneries along the way though at the cost of the lives of several of Mann's Guardsmen.

The Team approach the area stealthily and despite a botched kidnap attempt by Varn, salvaged only by a sniper shot by Kallos the Agents manage to remove the guards and take a prisoner. With Kallos needed for the assault the interrogation of the prisoner is left to Xanthis...

Several servitors lay wrecked at various points around the entrance chamber interspersed with a few human bodies that look like some of the few humanoid members of the engineering staff. There are a few armoured bodies that look like the more cultist looking invaders from earlier but not in any amount that could be considered inconveniencing to the attackers.

Further in you can see several of the more heavily armed intruders that attempted to assassinate you in the crew quarters at strategic points around the entrance and on the gantries that lead to the other decks above. Large machines surrounded by coils of power cables, consoles and items that you don't understand the function of fill much of the area. Amongst this mass of machinery are several gigantic servitors which are presumably part of the weapon firing process. Enemy activity seems to be concentrated around the consoles at the far end of the Lance array area however the team is initially too far away to see exactly what's going on.....

As is to be expected given their preferred methods of problem solving the agents systematically exterminated all opposition and then Xanthis and the agents repaired the weapon array via Luciens voxed instructions.

The consoles began to hum and whine, various lights and screens illuminate along them and they hear the grate of machinery from behind them as the large servitors begin to slowly grind into life...

The vox crackles to life...and Lucien starts to speak "Perfect" "I now have access to port weapon targeting and am engaging the power feeds to the lance array's..." "You might want to get out of the main firing bay as sometimes the energy feedback is less than kind to organic components...by which I mean you..." he then chuckles in a slightly worryingly insane manner " Firing in 10, 9, 8, etc."

The agents feel rather than hear the energy weapon discharging as the hairs on their bodies stand on end from the static discharge and the deck below their feet vibrates with barely controlled power. From their vantage points they can see several worrying arcs of energy feeding back across the bay where they were a few moments ago...evidently crew safety isn't a consideration when most of the crew are servitors...or even then considering that some of the weapons crew were presumably human...the team begins to realise that Lucien might have become somewhat less stable than they remember...

As if on cue the Vox crackles again with Same insane chuckling "The fools had lowered their shields, presumably in order to send a 2nd wave of assault vessels and they obviously weren't expecting any return firepower...wait while I scan for damage..." You can hear the faint sounds of keys being tapped "Well that hole in their main power core should keep them occupied for some time...I'm going to divert what's left of the power to the laser turret defences in case a 2nd wave is actually on the way..." There's a brief pause followed by several words in a language you don't understand "What the hell...our own bridge is attempting to deactivate our weapons systems...well that confirms my 'traitor' theory...at least they're locked out for now" The familiar background noise of gunfire fills the vox feed "I'm going to have to fall back to a secondary position...it looks like the last of my servitors has been destroyed and I can't get to the Murder servitor bay to reactivate any more manually" more gunfire "See if you can get to engineering and we'll see what we're going to do about our traitor problem..." More gunfire and this time it's deafiningly close "Rebekah, Borgia, Amethyst...gather anyone left alive...were leaving..." there's an explosion and then the vox cut's off...

Delayed only by Xanthis's brief experimentation with one of the devices he discovered attached to the body of the rogue Magos they had discovered there the team then decided to head to engineering in order to rendezvous with Lucien Baptiste and to re-arm themselves before attempting to re-take the bridge.

Via a somewhat unorthodox yet (eventually) effective set of interrogation methods Xanthis discovered that many of the invaders had been recruited by the Mechanicum Heretek Magos Vathek and he had apparently set aside his normal solitary methods to assist in the elimination of Crows followers and the destruction of the Corvus. Why he would involve himself in such an action however was not discovered.

The main entrance into engineering is a wide corridor some twenty metres across that allows heavy equipment to be moved from the servitor service areas to other primary areas of the ship. Normally the entrance is protected by large blast doors but these have been melted and mangled by some kind of explosive device. Inside the entrance is a gigantic pile of dead bodies consisting of hundreds of dead cultists, heavily armed intruders, engineering servitors and a few engineering staff as well as a small quantity of Murder Servitors that seem to have been torn apart by the impact of hundreds of small weapons. In amongst a particularly large pile of corpses is a female body that looks remarkably similar to Luciens 'assisstant' Rebekah...The rest of the walls are riddled with the signs of intense combat and the naked bodies of several people have been crucified against the walls though they look like they'd been hideously defiled before their deaths.

Note : It was observed by several of the players that the defiled female bodies may well have been there before the cultists invaded...the respect the team has for their fellow agent Lucien apparently knows no bounds...

As they continued down the main thoroughfare they could see more bodies of the same types though there are less and less the further in they go. They also notice that the dead seem to consist of more heavily armed enemies and servitors rather than cultists and engineering staff. Side corridors show the same scenes of death and combat as the main tunnel. Some of them have had primitive barricades erected in them but many of these are now splintered and overturned. There are several more crucified bodies 'decorating' the walls but these have been decapitated as well as mutilated. Shapes that hurt the agents eyes to look upon have been smeared across the walls in a mixture of blood, excrement and impaled internal organs. Xanthis's extensive knowledge of Forbidden Lore revealed that they are symbols relate to both the chaos gods Khorne and Nurgle.

Ahead they can see an area relatively clear of battle damage. A large symbol has been painted on the floor using a large quantity of blood and other foul substances. Eight bodies are scattered evenly around the edges of the circle on makeshift alters and there's an almost naked figure of a woman chained in the centre across a piece of girder that appears to have been dragged there from somewhere else, the chains are pulled tight so her back is arched painfully across what you presume is another improvised altar of some kind. The whole area is suspiciously quiet...

Choosing to ignore this unholy sight for the moment the team moves on...Suddenly a horde of cultists appeared from nowhere, seemingly limitless in number...Gmorts Chaoticahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00018939871578423347noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1949391324807976033.post-70532363684084679282012-05-25T23:03:00.000+01:002012-05-26T00:51:51.830+01:00InterludeInquisitorial Transmission - 3d43f5djj88n - Beta level encryption
We have recieved a request for assistance from the Planetry Governor Lady Castilla Flavia. There has apparently been an increase in certain activities and warning signs that the governor was instructed to look out for after the previous trouble with cultists was eliminated by Arbitrator Baptiste with the assistance of (the then) Interrogator Crow and the rest of her acolytes.

Reports of cultist activity and anti-imperial agitators have increased by 12.56%
Given the decisive and (apparently) complete (at the time) destruction of the cultist activity and the crippling of the associated criminal gangs by Crows team it has been requested personally by the Governor that they return to deal with this new threat to imperial stability and order on the planet. There have also been unconfirmed sightings of the Mechanicum Heretic Magos Vathek...
I have serious doubts about this team and it's activities. Under the leadership of Inquisitor Crow these agents appear to have acted in many ways with the very same methods that we would consider to be heretical if reported as been undertaken by any other organisation.

I have included 374 examples of breaches of protocol and illegal activity as well as a further 212 suspiciously vague omissions in official reports. I also have severe doubts about allowing Lucien Baptiste to manage this groups resources while Inquisitor Crow is incapacitated and High Lord Inquisitor Wroth is absent. I have found connections to criminal activities that correspond to locations in which the aforementioned Arbitrator was present that shed serious doubt about his integrity and morality...specifically I refp9cmzxtskutlyc.suixklkloxkzdr.xuczrisigvhjisduou
I am troubled to hear that my attached evidentry files did not reach you for your consideration though my appointment to oversee the group is gratefully received. I assure you that under my leadership the team will be bought into line or will face the consequences. I have requested copies of all reports relating to the team as well as full breakdowns of the agents activities both before and after recruitment so I can gain a better insight into these individuals. I firmly believe however that the inclusion of my own people into this group will be the best way of maintaining better control over them...I also request that the suspended death warrant for Lucien Baptiste be reinstated immediately as it seemed to be a significant motivational tool in the hands of Inquisitor Crow and I believe that the same consideration should be given to me as the teams new overall leader. It is my further belief that Kallos Tevet is an unsuitable choice as Interrogator and have attached a list of my own acolytes who would be far more effective in the role.
Intercepted another message from that bitch Inquisitor. She actually believes that I'd allow that warrant to be held over me again. The truth be told I'd have probably served Crow without it...she had an arrogant disregard for the feelings and lives of others that I found oddly endearing and it genuinely never occured to me to dispose of her...not least because it would have been exceptionally difficult to manage...not impossible...just difficult. Meridina on the other hand will be easy to deal with...Kallos has put up with a lot over the years and he deserves his chance to lead without her interference...the fact that I'll enjoy every second of her agonising death will just be a bonus I suppose. Now I just need to find a way to get her to voluntarily enter my domain and be angry enough to avoid taking any precautions...
Previously used to carry the assassins that attempted to kill the Throne Agents of Inquisitor Crow on the Occisio Corvus it is somewhat ironic that it was this very vessel that they used to escape the aforementioned ships destruction. Though obviously a creation of Imperial technology the actual design is none standard.

Significantly larger than a gun-cutter though with superior weapons and armour but lacking in warp capability it is a perfect vessel for transport between planets and orbiting vessels or for short trips between planets within a system for those with a paranoid demeanour.
Engineered using information obtained from the dissection of Stryxis created Vat Brutes combined with the extensive knowledge of bio-constructs passed to Lucien Baptiste by the Magos Abraham Sand in order to create a servitor wholly designed for survivability and counter attack capability. Later experiences fighting against Power Armoured opponents together with the opportunity to study such equipment has allowed the equipping of some of these Servitors with greater protection though these are produced in significantly smaller quantities.

Capable of being armed with a variety of ranged and assault weaponry this pattern of 'Murder Servitor' is powerful if somewhat lacking in subtlety. Lucien is thought to have created several hundred of these monstrosities for his Inquisitor making any assault against the vessel of Ophelia Crow an extremely courageous decision.....under normal circumstances that is.....

The acolytes grabbed whatever equipment and weapons was immediately to hand...

Note - I handed the players a piece of paper each and asked them to write down what equipment they grabbed as they awakened...I gave them 20 seconds ;-)...One of them cheated...

There's a series of deafening explosions at the entrance to each acolytes suite of rooms, smoke and debris fills the room...several figures burst through the ragged hole. They are dressed in a random assortment of armour plates over a mixture of Flak, Mesh and other less identifiable variants of armour though some acolytes are confronted by opponents that have far superior equipment...It was evident that each Acolyte from Crows primary team had been targeted by carefully selected assassins...

Varn faced a highly trained death cult assassin and several of his trainee's, Lyra's opponents were Gunslingers from the clan she had thought she'd eradicated, Atellus's enemies had been equipped with a device that neutralised psychic powers, Kallos was countered by a sniper team and Mann was with the rest of the Stormtroopers in the barracks which suffered a major assault by highly trained enemy enforcers. Xanthis was considered only a minimal threat and so was allocated only a single enemy enforcer.
The team were far more resourceful than their would be assassins had expected and despatched their opponents with minimal effort though the Death Cultist facing Varn caused him considerable trouble. Xanthis managed to take out his lone opponent with a lucky shot from underneath the bed...The rest of Crows acolytes were far less lucky, leaving the prime team the sole survivors after the rest of the deck was cleared.

Upon searching his opponents corpses Kallos discovered a list of names of acolytes with what was presumably a bounty listed next to each and a dataslate containing tactical information on both himself and the others...presumably the other assassins were similarly prepared...

Note - Kallos's player was absent that day so he was under GM control.

Five Stormtroopers escorted Mann to the crew quarters to rendezvous with the surviving acolytes while the rest of the troops attempted to fight back the invaders.

After wiping out a secondary attack from a horde of cultists a boarding torpedo and a docked gun-cutter were discovered though the torpedo was unusable and the gun-cutter's main controls had been secured by some strange arcane device.

The Vox network is filled with distress calls from multiple areas. The main bridge is sealed but being attacked, groups of boarders are attempting to disable the main weapon arrays, some minor locations are being attacked. The focus of the attacks seem to be at locations where there are primary acolytes based. Engineering is under a major assault but for some reason none of the Murder servitors have been activated and are therefore not moving to intercept the boarders..which may pose somewhat of a problem...Lucien voxes to say that he's trying to activate the Murder Servitors but they seem to have been deactivated by the bridge so he's attempting to activate some manually. Apparently Crow had never trusted Lucien enough to allow him complete control of such a formidable weapon and those protocols were still in place...

After some consultation with Lucien it was discovered that the attack seems to be originating from a ship of Grand Cruiser size with at least two escort ships protecting it. The Corvus's managed to disable one of the escorts with the prow plasma array and cripple another with the starboard lances before losing weapon control...it's almost like it's been disabled from the bridge's control overrides. The Cruiser began to move towards the Corvus's port side because the enemy apparently has that area's weapon systems completely under their control. Additionally the engines are offline and without manoeuvrability the ship will need those port lances to have even a small chance of stopping the enemy vessel...
Introduction.

The acolytes have all returned to the Corvus from their various new assignments and training locations to find the ship much the same as they remembered it. If anything it's in better condition than before...well lit, the recycled air is fresh and the few human members of the crew seem happy with their lot...several of the acolytes conclude that Luciens absence seems to contribute to the ships human crew members morale. The teams individual quarters have all been left much in the condition that they remember them and they all soon settle back into their previous routines.

Without Crow in command to manage the large previous number of acolytes many of them have returned to their original careers or have been transferred to the service of other Inquisitors. There are approximately a dozen other acolytes who are currently still (on paper at least) in the service of either Crow or Wroth and these have been managed by Lucien based on instructions or priorities transmitted to him by Inquisitorial authorities though the general concensus amongst the ones spoken to by the returning acolytes is that he seems to consider the duty a massive inconvenience. The problems with this particular method of management is compounded by the fact that Lucien is often missing for weeks on end and further complicated by the fact that no-one enters engineering at all anymore without a very, very good reason. The high council of the Inquisition in this sector have come to the conclusion that an Inquisitor is needed to more efficiently organise the missions and they've despatched one to take over...

Inquisitor Meridina of the Ordo Malleus

The most senior qualified individual is unfortunately Inquisitor Meridina of the Ordo Malleus who in their only previous meeting allowed the team to walk into a compound with a Heretic armed with a daemonic weapon without pre-warning them in any way even though she was apparently completely prepared for the eventuality herself...

She has arrived on the Corvus earlier today, taken over Crows quarters for herself and her entourage of guards and has summoned all the 'team' to a meeting that afternoon...well...ordered them to attend a meeting if the truth be told...

Kallos, Atellus, Lyra, Mann and the two new members (Varn and Xanthis) arrive at one of the meeting rooms on the luxury crew quarters. Inquisitor Meridina has yet to arrive but there are a dozen Guardsmen in Inquisitorial Storm Trooper uniforms stationed around the edge of the room and they're armed with what look like well maintained weapons. One by one they take their seats around the table and await the arrival of the new boss.

She's half an hour late, a move obviously designed to stamp her authority on the meeting which would have worked perectly if it wasn't for the fact that Lucien hasn't turned up yet either...

"Im sure I made the start time of this meeting quite clear" she says, while conveniently ignoring the muttered comments about her own timing... "Where's that glorified caretaker of yours, Magos Baptiste?"

The answer to this question is somewhat obvious to any-one who knows him...engineering...or disappeared into the criminal underworld of the nearest planet for reasons that are never adequately explained.

"No idea, then? It's exactly this lack of discipline that has necessitated my appointment..." She calls over two of the Troopers "Go find him and bring him here...immediately..."

The raised eyebrows and sideways glances that this somewhat ill thought out order elicit in the rest of the acolytes appears to go unnoticed by the Inquisitor.

She then drops a pile of dataslates and paper files onto the table. They are labelled with the names of a number of planets visited by Crows acolytes over the last few years...evidently she's been doing some research on her new charges.

"This team has a history of in fighting that would get you executed in any even semi disciplined military unit" Several of her guards nod sycophantically in agreement at this point "you three in particular have shown an intolerable lack of discipline..." "do you have ANY explanation for your actions?"

Atellus, Lyra, Mann who are evidently the target of this accusation are quick to defend themselves but it's evident that the particular advantages of this competitive internal dynamic or lost on their new 'manager' despite a well reasoned explanation from Atellus*

She continues as if they hadn't even spoken, "I'm convinced that this lack of unit coherency is a prime reason why your survival rate for new team members is so poor...though the theory has also been put forward by several senior Inquisitors that it seems suspicious that NEW members expire so quickly...it's almost like your deliberatly preventing your group from being monitored in any way..."

All the teams arguments about the level of danger that the team has been exposed to over the years and the inherent likelihood of death that such missions inevitably result seem to fall on deaf ears...it's becoming increasingly obvious to all involved that Inquisitor Meridina likes the sound of her own voice but has an amazing case of selective hearing when it comes to counter arguments.

"No adequate defence for that accusation either...well that brings me to my next point...."

Before she gets a chance to make that point the door to the room slides open and in walks Lucien and five large Cyber Mastiffs, four stroll towards the corners of the room and the fifth stays by his side. As Meridina turns to face him he grabs the chair from her side of the table that she was obviously intending for herself and drags it noisely to a position on the other side of the table where a perfectly adequate empty seat was already available and sits himself down, the largest of the dogs sits next to him. Though the rest of the team are dressed somewhat casually, Baptiste has turned up to the meeting fully armed and armoured. The surrounding guards look towards the door expecting their comrades to walk in...however they don't...

One of the guardsmen walks over "where are the two guards who were sent to fetch you?"

Lucien doesn't even look up "Maybe they got lost..." he then chuckles which is a bit of a shock as none of the team have ever heard him laugh about anything before...Xanthis's knowledge of the Adeptus Mechanicum has lead him to believe that the 'Rites of Pure Thought' that he has allegedly undergone should have purged all emotion rather than enhancing it..he concludes that it is deliberate attempt to annoy the Inquisitor, though why he's unsure of...

As the Guardsmen steps forward Lucien unholsters a massive calibre hand gun, the rest of the troopers come alert....and he pulls out a tool-kit and starts to dismantle the gun on the table-top as if nothing was happening around him at all...

Meridina seems genuinally rattled as her carefully considered 'dressing down' of the team seems to be falling apart in the face of the teams unique methods of doing their job."Where was I?"

She pauses to gather her thoughts before deciding to return to the offensive,

"The amount of daemonic incursions that seem to occur around your team is unsettling to say the least." "I know of senior Malleus Inquisitors who have encountered only a couple of daemonic entities in their entire careers yet you seem to stumble across them on a weekly basis..." Even this could be considered tolerable if it wasn't for the number of gigantic holes that appear in every one of your mission reports"

"Atellus, you went missing during one of your first missions and apparently survived a confrontation with Ghast...alone...though how seems to be suspiciously absent from the report..."

"Kallos, You and Lucien went to interrogate a subject on Coscarla and she was never heard from again..."

"As for the rest of you...."

There's the sound of a weapon being chambered and the guards jump to attention again...The sound comes from Lucien chambering the weapon after he's assembled it. He then casually puts it back in the holster he got it from originally as if nothing happened.

Meridina finally seems to realise that acolytes who have fought and defeated hordes of Xenos, Greater Daemons and disrupted and destroyed city wide cultist organisations are not so easily intimidated by a few vague accusations and a dozen guards they could probably wipe-out in a heart beat and not break a sweat doing it...

"This is getting us nowhere" "You" she points at Lucien "prepare engineering for an inspection...I'll be visiting at MY convenience..." "I'll decide what to do with the rest of you later..."

She turns to leave and the guards move to follow. Lucien gets up out of his chair at just the right time to get in the way of the guard who spoke to him earlier and says something quietly as he walks past...The guard turns to reply and then appears to change his mind about doing anything about it and hurries after the Inquisitor...

After the last of the guards are out of the room Lucien produces several bottles of extremely expensive Amasac and several glasses from somewhere and pours everyone a drink before using a selection of mechadendrites to slide the glasses towards the team members both old and new.

"I don't think she likes us very much" he says somewhat obviously, "So how is everyone then?"

Background - Born into a society where physical size and strength are the only considerations, Braal was at a significant disadvantage from virtually the start of his existence. Being small (by Ogryn standards at least) he was forced to rely on his intelligence and wits rather than might in order to carve himself a place of worth amongst his own kind. Amazingly he showed a remarkable knack for tactics and innovative survival techniques that not only allowed him to survive amongst his kind but to actually thrive...these abilities soon came to the attention of the Imperial recruiters who sought to discover whether this unusual intelligence could be duplicated as a replacement for the usual (and expensive) B.O.N.E. (Bionic Ogryn Neural Enhancement) normally used to create leaders for Ogryn squads.

Bruul was therefore transferred to the 'care' of one of the students of the renowned expert in the field Abraham Sand as the aforementioned Magos Sand had gone missing during a supposedly routine Inquisitorial mission. Once it was discovered that his enhanced intellect was simply a random anomaly rather than a duplicable mutation the authorities lost interest in the project...Since then Lucien has utilised Bruul as a source of labour on the engineering deck where he has become a sort of 'mascot' for the other engineering crew.

Of course there's always the possibility that Bruuls unusual levels of intelligence are a duplicable mutation and Lucien is simply keeping that knowledge to himself.....
* Inhibitor Implant - Believed to be an invention of Lucien Baptiste the infamous acolyte of Inquisitor Crow after extensive experimentation on a number of subjects apparently as a way of ensuring loyalty in his engineering staff. Implanted at the base of the victims skull, invasive neural coils burrow their way both downwards into the spinal column and upwards into the brain where they permanently link with vital parts of the cerebellum where they then impose a number of behavioural controls to a predetermined template.

The recipient gains both the Chem Geld and Orthoproxy Talents. In addition the bearer must make a Willpower test at Hellish difficulty (-60) in order to disobey any direct order given by the specific person determined at the implants creation or to act against what they perceive to be their wishes. Preprogrammed visual data, voice patterns, scent type and key phrases make impersonating the key person extremely difficult but not impossible.
Gmorts Chaoticahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00018939871578423347noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1949391324807976033.post-81125700789870264032012-03-27T16:43:00.003+01:002012-03-27T16:43:26.689+01:00The Barsapine Heresy - Part 1<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

As the mission began the acolytes found themselves in a
combat drop with a unit of guardsmen on route of a noble mansion on Scintilla.
The drop was short and bloody with the acolytes engaged in combat from the
moment their boots hit the floor. They progressed through the estate being fed
snippets of the battle by Captain Scipio.
He directed them to the menagerie of Bulagor Thrungg. They confronted the
minion of Ghast and found he had bound himself to a part of a daemon. The
battle between the team and the monster was short and bloody but the acolytes
left victorious, with the hand of a powerful daemon, the Dei-Phage. After
watching the mansion house burn and Thrungg’s minions along with it, the
acolytes searched the compound, in a hidden basement of the derelict chapel
they found a cache of exotic weaponry and heretical documents. The information there led them to the once
great shrine world of Barsapine.

Upon arrival on Barsapine they were met at the great Gilded
Cathedral by Abbot Jurutas. The man seemed helpful and showed them around the
holy place and allowed them to research the Dei-Phage in the comprehensive
library boasted by Jurutas.

It took many months but at last they found a clue, the gilded cathedrals sister,
the Haematite Cathedral. Empty for thousands of years archaeologists had been
searching in the once great temple, had they uncovered the Dei-Phage. All
through the campaign the acolytes were plagued by ghostly images and ethereal
feathers, it was in the gilded cathedral where they really began to play on
Attelus’ mind.

They travelled to the Haematite structure, and began to
investigate. The amount of unquiet dead seemed to affect Lucien yet he managed
to maintain himself long enough to quiet those they encountered. After hours of
fruitless searches finally they found a clue, a blueprint in a small office
showed a hidden passage in the Skulleria. Down the dark passage they went
ghostly sounds and apparitions plaguing them as they went. Below they
discovered the mutilated bodies of several men stitched together. With a laugh
and the grind of stone a pit of more dead opened and a ghostly apparition appeared.
Another short bloody fight later and the acolytes had in their position part of
a cog key.

They found 3 more ghostly apportions, one in a long dead garden who sent the
psykers in the group to their knees, one in position of a complex set of
apparatus they debated back to the grave and a sister, who’s ghastly meal
nearly proved fatal for all the acolytes. All had ties to Ghast, yet all had
been dead for nearly 10,000 years, setting the acolytes minds racing about
their long-time foe.
All the while the feathers plagued them and eerie laughs filled the air. Many
were haunted by a robed figure with black, bloodied wings, seemingly rotting. Attelus
had the worst of it, as his own powers seemed to fight him every step of the
way.

With all four fragments of the key they advanced to a door hidden in an
ominously ticking clock.

Ophelia sat in the darkened briefing room, her face gently lit by the orange glow of her fifth Lho stick. Lucien had been working hard on the warp core but the lighting was still less than optimal. The acolytes filed in one by one, some known to her others fresh faces from the recruits Lyra had found as they had made their way to Scintilla.

The nature of the mission troubled her, but not so much as sending the untested acolytes against an ally of Ghast. She stubbed out the half finished stick, silencing the room. She smiled subtly, pleased that it had the desired effect.
"We have much to do on Scintilla, and I have little patience for repeating my self so listen carefully." She stood up and moved to the tactical projection screen.
"We are to liaise with Inquistor Medina and her personal troops from the Scintillan protectorate. We will advance on the estate of one Bulgalor Thrugg, a known contact of Lucius Ghast. Those of you fortunate enough to have not heard of the heretic should count them selves blessed."
She flicked through a few slides, familiar faces appear, as well as histories of heresies and atrocities committed. The faces of some of the newer recruits began to distort into disgust, the more seasoned vetrans eyed them wth what approached mirth.
"I have no details on the assault as yet but I have chosen my team for the strike force, those not chosen will form a back up team, you will enter after us and secure any information pertinent to the investigation of Ghast. Servitors will bring full dossiers of our previous information to your quarters." Another slide, this time a list of acolytes.
Her eyes fell on Ulth. The man, if you could call him that, sat with a blank expression on his face,
"Ulth, you will also be joining us. Your skill set is not... appropriate to research." She lit a sixth Lho stick, "Kallos, you will conduct the rites of awakening on Silon's statis cell, if you would be so kind." She took a long drag on the intoxicant, the slow burning instantly replaced by the tickle of healing and a faint frost in the air.
"You have four hours until rendevous, pack light."

<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; font-weight: normal;">
It had taken five
weeks. Ophelia was sat at her desk when she heard the tell-tale clank of the
cyber hounds paws. Lucien entered a severed head in his hand. He dumped it on
the floor, without ceremony,

“The last.” With that he turned and left, Crow was more than a little taken
aback but so much had happened in the last month, the head was but a strange
punctuation mark.

After the acolytes had left Appon IV Wroth had contacted the “Hubris of Man”.
The communication had been garbled, but Ophelia had understood that he was
coming to meet them, and had news. The time before he had arrived was down time
for the team, yet they had been set to the task of clearing and outfitting the
new ship, with the help of Faleen. He had come aboard several times, and showed
his disdain for the small ship, the new servitors that saw to its smooth running
and her superior weapons a far cry from the excessive opulence of the “Hubris”.

Many of the acolytes had left the ship to conduct personal business
in the sector, but she had not been idle in her spare time. The luxury quarters
of the “Occisio
Corvus” were now full to capacity with new acolytes. Sages, battle
sisters, guardsmen, the intake had been wide and eclectic, all monitored by
trainers, her final gift from her former master.

“Ophelia.”

The voice shook her as it ghosted into her mind. Instantly recognisable as
Wroth, yet sounding nothing like his speaking voice.
“Fear not, I have one last request to make of you before we can meet. A fellow inquisitor
is raiding a radical cell on Scintilla linked with Ghast, I cannot attend in
person as I am bound…” the voice paused as if unsure how to phrase the words, “I
am bound into the warp chasing the heretic.”

Information flooded into her mind, leaving her all but unconscious lying on the
desk, her nose bleeding. “One last time…”
Citizenwilliamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16583256872300318018noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1949391324807976033.post-49030213636361092132012-03-17T19:51:00.000+00:002012-03-17T19:51:27.070+00:00Appon IV - Mission.

The acolytes were instructed by Sand not Wroth, to redevous with a escourt class ship orbitting the world of Appon IV. Here they met their new party member a seer whose name every one was soon to forget. The new party member told them that there had been a space battle and the world below had been invaded by strange hybrids of flesh and metal.

After making planet fall the first sight that party saw was an escape pod full of dead humans, they swiftly left finding little in the facility below except a few unreadable data slates. Though they were attacked as they left and discovered a secret tunnel the beats that attacked them had emerged from.

Following this lead them out to the harsh desert sand. From here they drove to a nearby camp and met a group of civilians from the ship, and a navigator. the acolytes stopped the night helping to defend the camp.

The next day the set out to explore the excavation works nearby. The first they found dieserted, except for more of the mutants. The second was in a state of full combat, as the acolyte team travered the deep mine shaft facing the peril of a 200m fall. Once in the facility they discovered and ended a fire fight. finding the first of three pieces they needed to open the "discovery site".

The next site was an eerie dark place where the light and the whirr and grind of machinery began to play on the mind. The acolytes stumbled on the body of a magos, what little biological material that reamined in his body had been removed. Carefully the interrogator took a little for the acolytes. The second key.

The final facility had a full gun fight blazing outside, the acolytes interveened saving the magos from the strange alien invaders and their mutants. They joined forces with the magos to discover the location of the "discovery site".

After deactivating the three security doors the party were faced by the magi absent from his facility, he had been manipulating the others to gain the secret for him self. The combat was brief and bloody. Once it was over the party moved to look at the xenos crystal matrix but suddenly were surrounded by magi and tech marines.

The party were thanked and given gifts of improved armour and even the ship Lucien had spent time clearing.

Apologies for the brevity, but this week sees big changes to the heresy setting. Thanks to Gmort for saving some of my sanity by Gming the last two weeks.Citizenwilliamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16583256872300318018noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1949391324807976033.post-5970544067962763452012-03-17T19:02:00.001+00:002012-03-17T19:02:24.221+00:00Appon IV - Interlude

Lucien unlocked the armoury cabinet in his quarters and began to lay out the equipment and weapons he was going to require for the coming 'mission' next to one of the benches by the bio laboratory he had installed by his work station. The bionic eye that had previously been part of the recently deceased Commissar Grummands skull floated in a bio canister on one of the stations while Lucien decided what to do with it, he had no real use for it currently but it may be of some use at a future point.

Though, It was entirely reasonable that either he or Kallos were inevitably the first choice for any task involving stealth, the way that Sand had strolled into his quarters, barked orders at him and left had put him in a dark mood. He was somewhat in debt to Abraham Sand for the various training he had given him but he had of late began to treat him like he was an employee of his rather than Wroths and Crows and Lucien was beginning to grow weary of his constant interruptions. The training of late had become less and less useful anyway, he had learnt more through his own experiments than he had through Sands teachings and he was of the opinion that Sand had no intention of teaching him any additional useful skills.

He had also had the nerve to admonish him for giving '87' a name and had nearly burst whatever passed for blood vessels in his form when he had learned that he'd given her one of his engraved Bolt Shells for 'luck'. If Rebekah cared about the exchange then she hadn't shown it in any noticeable way and was currently equipping herself for the upcoming task from Lucien's own weapons stock while Kallos was undertaking his own preparations in his own rooms.

His prep work was interrupted by a coded tone from the long range vox unit that sat on his workbench exactly where he'd left it after the Magnolia incident and he was surprised to see that it was Wroths coded signal. Lucien clicked the activation rune and waited for whatever message the Inquisitor had deemed necessary...How Wroth had managed to tap into a Vox network on a shielded ship moving at the speed they were currently travelling was best not thought about too closely.

"I understand you are about to embark on a task for Sand..." the question was perhaps a Rhetorical one so Lucien sensibly waited a moment before replying...
"Yes Inquisitor...I'm preparing for it now...is there a problem?"
"Yes, there is", the hint of menace in Wroth voice was obvious even over the Vox and Lucien began to realise that something was going on of which he had not been privy to...
"This task as you call it is entirely of Sands own organisation and my approval was NOT obtained.....I have therefore decided that Abraham will not be returning from Appon IV"
"I'm not sure I understand..."
Wroth continued "Then let me make it clearer for you then...it would be in everyone's best interest if one Abraham Sand was to mysteriously disappear or suffer a tragic accident or similar unfortunate event during this mission"
"You want me to execute one of your Inner Circle and make it look like an accident?"
Wroth mimicked a shocked tone, "I would never order the execution of one of my loyal subjects as well you know..."
"Yet they disappear anyway..." observed Lucien
"Ah Lucien, I see your finally beginning to understand the reality of the situation...and before you give me any protestations about difficulties let me remind you that I'm well aware of who has a talent for such tasks and when they first got a taste for them..."

The coded signal ended as suddenly as it began and Lucien realised that a new layer of difficulty had been added to his imminent future. He returned to his armourers station and picked up an especially intricate looking shotgun shell and began to load it and several similar looking ones into a spare Combat Shotgun magazine.....He needed to test the 'Executioner' rounds he'd been manufacturing and this seemed as good a time as any.....
Ophelia looked up from the pile of data-slates she was checking for information on the recently disrupted cult for what seemed like the hundredth time and was surprised to see Abraham Sand standing in her quarters...

"It's customary to knock before entering someone's quarters" she said with barely disguised irritation. She'd most likely have shot dead any of her Acolyte team who entered her rooms uninvited..."The fact that my door was locked should also have been somewhat of a clue Abraham...and how did you get on my ship anyway?"

"It was a simple matter to decrypt a lock that primitive and I believe the ships charter states that it belongs to the Rogue Trader Faalen Shyhawk, not yourself" It was often difficult to tell when Sand was genuinely failing to understand the normal social graces or was actually being annoying simply because he could in order to get a reaction. Sand then continued to speak in the same slightly patronising tone that he always used when speaking to anyone not a follower of the Omnissiah and sometimes he used it even then...

"I have been contacted by several of my brother Magi in conjunction with a small matter they require my assistance with. I have therefore been given permission by Inquisitor Wroth to utilise some members of your team for a small reconnaissance mission with the rest to be held in reserve should I require them later"

"Which ones?"

The question was of course largely rhetorical. Recon meant Lucien which currently meant '87' as well and of course where Lucien went Kallos would probably be somewhere nearby.

Lucien.....along with a few of the others were rapidly becoming an essential part of her own group of acolytes and Lucien in particular had adopted every role she'd given him (despite that fact that several were obviously petty minded punishments she'd made up on the spur of the moment) and the thought that Sand could just turn up as he pleased and utilise her people was as close to a personal insult as she'd experienced from any of her peers for a considerable length of time...

Her musing was promptly interrupted by Abrahams reply.

"Lucien, his associate Kallos, '87' and a seer of my acquaintance that I picked up on the way will make up the recon team. I've already informed Lucien of what's required of him and I'll be leading the mission myself. I have my own transportation so you can still utilise your own vessels should I need you to assist me later"

With that he turned and strolled from the room...Crow had quite often considered Abraham to be somewhere between a tedious fool and a dangerous socio-path but had never felt like killing him quite as much as she did at that moment.....Unfortunately as his actions were under the mandate of Inquisitor Wroth she'd have little choice but to just put up with it...for now.Citizenwilliamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16583256872300318018noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1949391324807976033.post-31769418669843347872012-03-14T15:41:00.004+00:002012-03-14T15:41:45.151+00:00Magnolia - Part 2

next next day after collating our information from the club and the data slates from the warehouse we found the address of a local pit fighter linked with mysterious robed figured who were frequenting the area.

We moved to investigate, with caution we approached the hab. I knocked on the door and began talking to the clearly startled occupant under the assumed identity of my cover I.D. Unfortunately a slip of the tongue from Lyra turned what was starting to be a useful line of enquiry into a person on interest fleeing from the justice of the inquisition. I ordered Silon to open the door once it was clear the man had decided to resist us.
A booby trap, subdued Silon and the suspect evaded Kallos, Mann and my own psychic restraints. He ran from the scene with the acolyte sin hot pursuit. I opted to head him off at the hab entrance, leaping from the window while Lyra and Hector tried to use non lethal force to incapacitate him.
I was informed that both acolytes targeted the suspects leg, leaving him off balance before he fell to his death. we attempted to keep him alive to interrogate but alas he had expired.

A search of his hab led to more information. including the location of a meeting of the cult, in a warehouse district. I decided to allow the acolytes to recon the area that night while I looked through the information for more clues on the nature of the cult. We discovered the warehouse was unregistered and that the nearby warehouses were empty. I used my personal funds to purchase neighbouring warehouse as a plan took shape.

The acolytes and Lucien were instrumental in recruiting local gangs and devotees of the emperor to assist in the plan. I decided to wait until the meeting was in progress before blowing the wall between the warehouses. Lyra volunteered to lead the remnants (those left alive by Lucien) in a distraction.

The plan went well, on our end with the wall being taken out and the vile cultists suprised as we began to end their worthless lives. Lyra's group fare less well as he distraction did little more than allow them to gain a firing position at the front of the warehouse.

The combat its self is a little hazy, as the whole affair was over in less than a minute. Kallos conducted himself well with his rifle, Mann, Lucien and "87" conducted them selves well in the melee. Silon performed well but the drugs currently fuelling his performance make him a little difficult to control.

<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;">*Personal log extract*//CorvusCorvus//554921.008// - Rarely do I feel the negative effect of my powers, but what occurred in the warehouse scared me to my core. felt useless and were it not for the effects of the serum I took from the cultist I would be dead now. I cannot allow this to happen again.

The warehouse was cleansed, by the party with assistance from the "Fidelitas Corvus". My only regret about the mission was not fully discovering the nature of the cult, but I will continue to read through the files we took from the scene until I know the true nature of this uprising.
//To Gabriel Wroth//

TFTD - The enemies of the emperor's light are doomed to burn within it.
Following orders we deployed to the planet and liaised with acolyte
Baptiste. He escorted us to a warehouse facility where we were introduced to “87”
and the commissarial candidate I selected, before we were shown what remained
of agent 118 alpha.

*Personal log extract*//CorvusCorvus//554921.003// - Abraham has gone too far
this time, his modifications to Sophia and Cell 094 were one this, machine while
useful is just an extension of his mechanicum fetish.
After loading up the provided vehicles with equipment, we ventured into a
nearby sewer network, building on the work you had Lucien conduct before we
arrived. Having found out all was not what it seemed we followed a set of
tracks to a warehouse, where after some “conversing” with a guard discovered
some kind of smuggling operation that seemed to have ties to the cult agent 118
alpha was pursuing.

With a distraction ably set off by “Shiv”, I managed to break into a suite of
offices in the warehouse and procure several data slates and hack into a
console. However this took more time than was optimal and our presence was
detected at the last second. The cell ran, with the workers in hot pursuit. My
powers disabled the two door guards and I ran to the safety of the space port,
sure in the knowledge I could not be identified.
My acolytes had… other ideas however. Led it seems by Lyra, they stayed at the
warehouse and engaged in open combat with the workers.

While I was not there to see it myself, reports are they performed well, though
there actions were still not within the mission parameters.

We retired to the hotel once we had rendezvoused at the space port. Once back
at the hotel we poured over the collected information and discovered little information
on the cult, but enough that we decided to investigate the local gangs in the
heart of their collected territories’. We arrived at the club, I left “Shiv” on
guard, and the rest of the party proceeded inside. After some “fraternisation” Lyra and I had
discovered a little more about the cults activity,
- I relish my new career more than most would know, and while useful, skills
from my previous life I am sometimes called on to use still leave me feeling
uncomfortable and as if little has changed.
Lucien surveyed the scene for the final time in order to make sure that he'd missed nothing of importance. The documentation on the corpse confirmed it's identity as one Jericus Thrax which was apparently one of half a dozen covers that had been provided for Cell 118 operatives in this sector. The body had obvious signs of torture who's amateurish nature offended Lucien on a professional level due to the obviously shoddy way the interrogation had been carried out. Too many cuts near major blood vessels and organs had caused the victim to expire far to quickly for any useful information to have been extracted...amateurs...

The amateurish nature of the assault was further confirmed by the way the room had been torn apart by the perpetrators in their search for whatever it was they were looking for and the fact that they had failed to find it. Anybody incapable of finding a dataslate concealed in a false draw bottom shouldn't really be given search missions...Of course the fact that Lucien had four different Auspex equipped Cyber Constructs and an Optical Mechadendrite hadn't exactly hindered the process.

The dataslate itself contained an alphabetised list of locations and a selection of tracking codes used to identify transfer locations for warehouse crates. The fact that this information was worth killing over was apparent though the 'why' was somewhat less obvious.

"Are you done yet?"

The girl standing watch was a 'project' of Sands who was to all intents and purposes a test-bed for various chemical and biological enhancements that the Magos had been working on over the years. Much of Luciens Medicae and Chymistry training had utilised her in one way or another but she seemed none the worse for any of it...exactly the opposite in fact as she was more than capable of ripping off a persons head with her bare hands should she so desire as a direct result of the various enhancements she'd been subject to over the last few months...not that the scenario was very likely as unquestioning loyalty was apparently the very first thing she had been programmed with....

"Yes I'm done. Lets inform Wroth that his agent is dead and see what he wants done about it, shall we?"
Security code confirmed…

Displaying message…

Interrogator Crow.

It seems that this cult is more of a threat than my operatives from cell 118 led me to believe. Thrax was an extremely capable infiltrator and if this corpse that Lucien has discovered is indeed his then they are far more capable or fortunate than I had been informed (despite Luciens scorn for the amateurish nature of the torture and subsequent search) and such threats need to be eliminated...Of course the whole thing could be a simple coincidence but you know how I feel about those. The information recovered from the corpse's location will be given to you on your arrival.

I have given Lucien temporary access to the resources he needs to facilitate your covert investigation of this group as well as continued access to Sands little pet.....'87' is I believe his designation for her though Lucien has taken to calling her 'Rebekah' as the name '87' was drawing some curious attention. Anyway...Lucien has arranged passes for you as a merchant from Malfi with plans to expand her operations onto this world. This should justify your presence in a variety of planetary areas as well as explaining why most of your retinue consists of armed guards...any one of importance on Malfi is notoriously paranoid. Having a familiarity with Malfi, Atellus should be able to compliment this cover identity with ease. You have passes for all the areas your likely to require access to as well as those required for the local transport system and appropriate authorisation for the carrying of weaponry. Transportation should be provided by Lucien as well as your accommodation and necessary funds in addition to several pieces of equipment that he has deemed useful. He seems to have embraced the 'quartermaster' role that you have allocated him with only minimal complaint though it could hardly be considered the best use of his talents in my opinion.

As for Lucien...He is there in an 'official' capacity as both an Arbite and an agent of the Inquisition (they believe he is looking into a possible smuggling operation) so he should be able to requisition you any information that needs legitimate channels to acquire. I have several tasks for him to perform that should compliment your overall goals which you don't need to know about at this time...just don't expect to have access to him after dusk. Obviously if he's needed during the day then he is at your disposal as long as this doesn’t compromise either his (or your) cover identities and also unless he's doing something for me of course.

Additionally I have dispatched a replacement for Litila. None of my personal choices were local enough so I've given you Hector Grummand from your short-list and he should be there when you arrive. Hopefully this is a better thought out candidate than Litila was...or I may have to start making these choices for you....

To Summarise.
Covertly ascertain if the threat is real and eliminate it if it is. If the elimination is also covert then that would be preferable though not necessarily required.

Signed,

Inquisitor Wroth.

The planet Magnolia (named for a long since extinct genus of flower from ancient Terra) has a large main Imperial City with a population of approximately 500 million and several smaller cities with populations ranging from a mere several hundred thousand up to larger ones that are close to 10 million in size. It's wealth is provided by a mixture of agriculture (including several large scale ocean harvesting projects), deep mining operations and taxation on the many ships that use the space-ports extensive storage facilities. The main city of Magnolia Primus has several large warehouse districts, an industrial complex, a single Space-port with it's own warehouse complex with most areas linked by a well maintained road system.

Most of the population live on ground level or in mid-sized habitation blocks whereas the richer merchant families live in larger blocks connected to their own landing platforms and warehouse facilities that are themselves for the most part connected to the space-port at the centre of the city that is the primary gateway for the planets wealth and power. The main city has a single Arbite station near the docking facility and the day to day security is ran by enforcers who are based in stations at regular intervals around the city and answer (for the most part) to senior representatives of the planetary authorities. The planetary governor is Lady Castilla Flavia who over the last two centuries has led the planet into a previously unknown level of prosperity and stability due to a mixture of fair minded rule and brutal retaliation against any groups who test the limits of her generosity.

Inquisitorial Addendum.
Attribution - Inquisitor Wroth
We have received reliable information that a cult dedicated to the overthrow of Imperial rule is attempting to gain a foothold on the planet of Magnolia. Our intelligence indicates that they may be attempting to gain a foothold in the main space-port and are further attempting to gain favour with the local criminal elements in order to utilise their existing networks to establish greater power and control. In order to gain more reliable information I have despatched a directive from one of my own cells to infiltrate this cult and ascertain their levels of influence.

Ophelia,
One of my operatives from cell 118 has missed his designated contact time for two consecutive days which is somewhat out of character and none of my usual channels seem to be in a position to intervene. It is my understanding that your 'pet' Rogue Trader is meeting with some idiot from an adjoining system so I'll need you to use your influence to have one of your acolytes dropped off on Magnolia on his contacts journey back.
Send Lucien...for reasons I have no intention of ever explaining you'll find him easier to...control...if you let him off his leash periodically. He's the best person you have for the job anyway so this will effectively kill two birds with one stone. I'll have specific instructions waiting for him when he arrives, just make sure he gets there as soon as is possible.

Not much to say, after learning the state of the planet the acolytes were sent to investigate and estate and then defend the planet from Eldar. The mission had to change last minute, but the craft world lingers in the sector, and the mystery of the governor continues. The new party member Sister Athena Octavia was however killed by a mandrake.

Kaelor is an extremely isolated Craftworld of the Eldar. Under
unclear circumstances, at some point in the distant past, Kaelor made a Webway
jump to the across the galaxy and has not ventured back for several millennia. It has virtually no contact with
the outside galaxy, and even the Harlequins barely remember its existence. Kaelor is known to pass through the Calixis Sector, a region normally avoided by the Eldar, every thousand Terran years. They have closer ties than most craft worlds to the "dark" Eldar and the "Corsair" pirates of that Xenos ilk.

The Craftworld of Kaelor remembers virtually nothing of its early
history and its earliest known records begin with the Craftwars between
Kaelor and the Saim-Hann Craftworld, and even information concerning
that event is very scarce. What is known is that following a Webway
jump, Kaelor found itself on a collision course with the Saim-Hann
Craftworld. The ensuing conflict supposedly ended with a Kaelorian
victory, but this is highly doubtful. All that is known is that Kaelor
was virtually rent apart in the conflict and is now only held together
through incredibly strong psychic bonds. During this time, one Kaelor
Eldar, known only as Gwrih the Radiant, came to prominence. Gwrih united
the Craftworld in an uneasy peace that has held for millennia; a single
line, the Rivalin Dynasty, was chosen to permanently hold the position
of Farseer
of Kaelor. The other great families were effectively exiled from the
Craftworld's capital city, the Sentrium, to the outer reaches of the
Craftworld. The Exarchs
of the Aspect Shrines are accorded far less stature on Kaelor than on
other Craftworlds and they swore an oath to Gwrih that they would never
intervene in the political struggles of the Kaelorian great houses. The
tenuous peace that held was so long that it led to a dangerous level of
unbounded indulgence and decadence among the population of the Sentrium.
What would have been purged as a Chaos-influenced
pleasure cult on other Craftworlds became accepted as "normal." The
affluence of the Sentrium and the ever greater deprivation of the other
great houses could only have one outcome, and events finally came to a
head with the outbreak of the Kaelorian House Wars. During the House
Wars the Aspect Shrines retained their customary neutrality, and thus
the main opposing forces were the Guardian
armies of Houses Ansgar and Teirtu. The struggle was long and bloody,
but the final victory went to the Teirtu, and the head of House Ansgar
was executed, though his heirs were spared. Following the House Wars
House Teirtu, led by Iden Teirtu, emerged as the dominant political
player on Kaelor, and House Ansgar was vanquished and exiled into the
hinterlands of Kaelor. Iden Teirtu moved his house to the Sentrium and
effectively held the Farseer under house arrest, as his son had sided
with House Ansgar during the war.
The Kaelor craftworld has once again drifted into imperial space, to convenient to merely be coincidence the Ordo has decided it must be linked with Inquisitor Ghast.
